Reflection
Throughout this semester, studying Design Research Methodology has significantly deepened my understanding of how academic research supports and enhances design practice. By focusing on the use of color in the portrayal of villains in Disney’s Cinderella, I was able to explore how visual elements influence audience perception and contribute to cultural stereotypes.
This course taught me how to formulate clear research questions, review relevant literature, and apply appropriate methods—particularly quantitative surveys—to collect and analyze data. The process of designing a questionnaire and interpreting audience responses allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world insights. I learned that colors are not just aesthetic choices; they carry meaning symbolics that can affect viewers’ emotional and moral judgments.
Moreover, I developed essential skills in academic writing, critical thinking, and data interpretation. The integration of interdisciplinary perspectives, including color psychology and semiotics, broadened my research scope and analytical ability.
Overall, this project not only enhanced my research competence but also helped me reflect on the social impact of design choices. I now view research as an integral part of the design process, guiding more thoughtful and innovative outcomes.
