Animation Fundamentals
Task: PROJECT1
INSTRUCTIONS
Week 5
Mr.kamal is sick and has asked for leave.
Week 6
Lecture:
1. Stage Clarity
Focus the audience on the main action.
Use clear poses and simple backgrounds to avoid distractions.
2. Secondary Action
Small movements that support the main action (e.g., swinging your arms while walking).
Make sure they add to the story, not distract from it.
3. Exaggeration
Make movements or expressions bigger to emphasize the emotion or action.
Keep it clear, don’t be too exaggerated.
4. Anticipation and Follow-up
Anticipation: Small movements before the main action (e.g., bending your knees before jumping).
Follow-up: The finishing movements after the main action (e.g., the swinging of hair after stopping).
5. Three-Dimensional Drawing
Use 3D techniques to give your characters depth, weight, and balance.
Make your characters feel real and believable.
Week 7
Lecture:
This week Mr. Kamal introduces us to key poses, extreme poses, breakdown poses, and in-between poses
In animation, these four poses are essential to building fluid and expressive movements. Here’s what each pose means and how they work together:
1. Key pose
What it is: The main point that defines the movement and tells the story.
Why it’s important: They form the structure of the animation, showing where the movement begins, changes, and ends.
For example: In a jump, key poses include the crouch before the jump, the highest point of the jump, and the landing.
2. Extreme pose
What it is: The most stretched or compressed moment in the movement.
Why it’s important: Adds energy and exaggeration, making the movement more dynamic and expressive.
For example: At the highest point of the jump, the body is fully extended; when landing, the body is contracted.
3. Breakdown pose
What it is: The poses between key moments that explain how the movement happens.
Why it’s important: Leads the movement, showing arcs, overlaps, or secondary movements, such as flowing hair or swinging arms.
For example: During a jump, the arms swing up and the legs begin to close in mid-air.
4. In-between poses
What it is: Smaller poses between all other poses that make the movement more fluid.
Why it’s important: Makes the movement feel natural and continuous by optimizing timing and spacing.
For example: The gradual drop between the top of a jump and the landing.
Week 8
Independent Learning Week
PROJECT 1/ Character Design
Assignment Requirements:
Project 1 consists of 2 work progressions:
1A - Character Design (Week 4) - 15% marks
1B - Background Design (Week 5) - 5% marks
Your goal is to create a character design that reflects his or her personality within the story and is visually appealing to the target audience.
Turnaround Sheet/Model Sheet (Front, Side, Back and ¾ View)
Pose Sheet (Various poses for different emotions/actions) - 5 poses *Full body
Character Facial Expressions - 5 expressions *Emphasis on chest upwards.
Inspiration:
My character design was inspired by the mystery and agility of the assassin. I have always been fascinated by the stealth, discipline, and unique style of the assassin, blending functionality with striking visuals.
In my design, I incorporated elements that reflect the essence of the assassin, Ninjas are known for their fast and fluid movements, so I focused on creating poses that convey agility and dynamism.
I used stylish and simple clothing inspired by traditional assassin clothing, balancing practicality and beauty.
Drawing inspiration from the assassins allowed me to create characters with a strong sense of mission and personality. Their discipline and focus also inspired me to complete this project with dedication and creativity. This theme provided me with a solid foundation to develop unique and engaging designs that tell a story beyond just appearance.
Final Design:
FEED BAKE:
The teacher said that my character designs are good, but the hair and clothing colors are too dull. They also mentioned that the expressions of my five characters should be drawn down to the chest area. Everything else is great.
REFLECTION
This project was a valuable experience where I explored creativity and improved my design skills. My characters were unique and detailed, showcasing distinct personalities through expressions, accessories, and posture. However, I faced some challenges. My teacher pointed out that the hair and clothing colors were too dull, which made the designs less vibrant. Additionally, they suggested extending the expressions down to the chest area to convey emotions more effectively.
Through this feedback, I learned the importance of using brighter, more dynamic colors to make characters stand out. I also realized how crucial full-body expressiveness is for storytelling. My teacher's guidance was instrumental in helping me identify areas for improvement and refine my work.
Moving forward, I plan to experiment with vibrant color palettes and focus on creating more expressive gestures. I’ll continue to seek feedback and apply it to enhance my designs. Overall, this project helped me grow as a designer, and I’m excited to use what I’ve learned in future projects.
